Thursday, America celebrates its 237th Independence Day. To mark the occasion, everyone is being asked to ring "freedom bells" which has been a tradition for the past 50 years.
The resurrection of the bell ringing is being pushed by the organization, No Greater Love (NGL) founded in 1971. NGL is a non-profit organization that honors fallen troops and their families and veterans, according to their website.
Why ring a bell? According to NGL, in the early 1700s the bell was the primary instrument used to call people together; gathering children for school, assembling the congregation, announcing important news, celebrating events, and alerting citizens to danger.
Why ring the bell on Independence Day? President John F. Kennedy called for the ringing of bells every year on Independence Day, July 4th. He signed a proclamation on July 4, 1963.
When should you ring the bell? NGL would like for everyone to do it at 2:00 p.m.
