Albuquerque, NM -- An employee of a New Mexico slaughterhouse has posted a video online, showing him fatally shooting a horse in the head.

The video has sparked outrage among animal activists, and it's prompted death threats to the meat company in Roswell.
The slaughterhouse has been seeking federal approval to slaughter horses.

The employee -- a maintenance contractor with Valley Meat Company -- is shown in the video bringing a horse out of its pen, swearing at animal activists, and then killing the horse with a single gunshot.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the state Livestock Board executed a search warrant at the employee's home. The county sheriff told the newspaper that the shooting is being investigated as an animal cruelty case.

A part-owner of the company, Rick De Los Santos, told a TV station that Tim Sappington was a contract worker who made the video on his own time and at his own home. De Los Santos says, "He shot a horse. That's what he eats. It's not against the law to slaughter your own horse." But he says he wouldn't have put the video on YouTube.
