China - A hen in southwest China's Guizhou province has laid an egg weighing a little over 200 grams, but what the owner found inside the shell was even more amazing.
Granny Yang, an 87-year-old villager from Bijie in Guizhou, showed to fellow villagers the giant egg, which her "heroic" hen had laid two weeks ago. Weighing almost half a pound, the egg is almost triple the size of those laid previously by the hen.
Yang asked a fellow villager to crack open the egg into a bowl, only to find two yolks and another egg shell inside the shell.
"I'm more than 80 now, but I have never seen eggs like this before," Yang said in surprise upon seeing the egg within an egg.
The hen started laying oversized eggs about three weeks ago and has since laid five now, Yang said, but adding that it had laid double-yolk eggs before that.
The 87-year-old owner said she thought the hen was dying when seeing it struggle to lay a huge egg for the first time.
The hen was bought one year ago and looks little different from the other ones owned by Yang. But the hen does have its own preferred diet.
"It doesn't eat corn (like other hens do). So I feed her rice instead," Yang said.
