Phoenix, AZ (KPHO) -- Have you ever seen an alligator with a fake tail? Meet Mr. Stubbs a gator who can get back to well being an alligator thanks to a landmark procedure.

Rescuers in Arizona think another gator bit off Mr. Stubbs' tail. Right away rescuers became concerned because Mr. Stubbs could drown or starve to death not being able to use his tail to store food.

Thanks to technology and the movie "Dolphin Tale," the 9-year-old American alligator has a new 3-foot-long tail. It took more than a year to develop with a team of researchers who came up with several models based on the molds of the alligator's stump and approximate tail size. They used Dragon skin and flexible silicone material to cover the prosthesis. Researchers also had to come up with a harness to secure the prosthetic tail to the alligator's body.
