The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is kicking off a first of its kind pilot program to help eliminate the invasive Burmese python from the Florida Everglades.

The 2013 Python Challenge started Saturday, January 12. This is the first time FWC has launched an incentive based hunt. The pilot program will test whether incentive based hunts are an effective way to remove invasive species.

There are grand prizes for those who catch the most pythons and the longest. Catching the most pythons will fetch the winner $1,500. The person who catches the longest python will win $1,000.

The Python Challenge concludes on February 10th.
