According to police, officers responded at around 1:00 am to the 700 block of National Highway and found Marty Fant, 48, in the southbound lane of the highway.

Officers performed CPR on Fant at the scene before Fant was taken to Thomasville Medical Center, where he later died.

According to the Davidson County Dispatch, Fant was struck by a vehicle driven by Teresa Pickard of Thomasville.

Pickard self reported the incident and called police after her car struck Fant.

Thomasville Police Sgt. J.W. Elgin told the paper, "The motorist tried to avoid Mr. Fant and tried to swerve at the last moment. The street was dark. Mr. Fant was wearing dark clothing, dark shorts and a dark shirt. It was a very dark area. In the specific area, where he had been laying, he could not be seen."

According to police, Fant had run out of gas on Interstate 85.
