  • Rockingham County, NC -- Investigators have arrested a Graham County man in connection with an arson that destroyed the Sheriff's Office last week.

Our Gannett partners at the Ashville Citizen-Times, report Mitchum Scott Turpin, 36, of Robbinsville, faces multiple charges including burning personal property, common law obstruction of justice, alter/steal/destroy criminal evidence, first-degree trespass and simple assault, according to documents on file at the Graham County Clerk of Court.

The May 17 fire destroyed an area of the sheriff's office used by detectives. No one was hurt.

When Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page heard about the fire, he knew he had to help. He says he knows Graham County has been hit hard with budget cuts so he wanted to help.

Sheriff Page asked Rockingham County Commissioner James Kallam to donate chairs, desks, and office supplies. They made it to Graham County Friday.

Turpin was placed under a $250,000 bond. He is scheduled for a first court appearance Tuesday morning.
