Terminally-ill Teen Fulfills Dream Of Joining Military

A 16 year-old, who is terminally-ill, was given a day to fulfill his dream of joining the military. The teenager was granted his wish of being a soldier for a day at the NCNG Army Readiness Center in Winston-Salem. Devin Southerland is receiving medical treatment for cancer in the city. He had hoped to become an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician in the military. Because of the effects of fighting cancer, he will never be able to pursue his dream of joining the military. His story hit home with the men and women who serve our community and our country. Some NC Guardsmen, NCNG units and the Winston-Salem Police Department's bomb disposal team are making the teenager's dream happen. Devin was given EOD training for the day, which included: wearing the bomb suit, working with bomb disposal robots, bomb X-Ray technology, explosive detecting canines and much more.
