BANGKOK (AP) -- Gunshots have rung out in the north of the Thai capital as pro-government supporters and anti-government demonstrators clashed sporadically with pistols, rocks and firecrackers on the eve of elections.

People caught up in the mayhem Saturday took refuge in a nearby mall and a pedestrian bridge, and some crouched behind cars.

According to the city's emergency services, at least two people were wounded in the clash in the Laksi district.

The confrontation began after a group of pro-government supporters marched to a district office containing ballot boxes that had been surrounded by protesters. That balloting material would normally be delivered just before voting begins Sunday.
