LONDON - Queen Elizabeth II's annual Christmas message says it's important to strike a balance between action and reflection.

In her prerecorded broadcast, Elizabeth says it's important to "pause and take stock" of big events amid life's distractions.

Seated at a table decorated with pictures of her immediate family, the 87-year-old monarch touched on prominent events over the past year. They include the 60th anniversary of her coronation and the birth of Prince George, son of Prince William and his wife, Kate.

She says the birth of a baby "gives everyone the chance to contemplate the future with renewed happiness and hope."The message is part of a royal tradition that began with a radio address by King George V in 1932.

The queen has recorded a Christmas broadcast on radio since 1952 and on television since 1957.
