ISLAND PARK, N.Y. -- Police say a bell dedicated to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre was stolen shortly after it was placed at a newly built playground, according to the Associated Press.
The 8-inch by 8-inch brass bell was discovered missing around 1 p.m. Sunday, according to police in Nassau County.
The community worked for two days to build the playground that housed the bell; they finished Saturday. This playground is one of 26 built to honor each of the victims killed during the shooting at the Newtown, Conn. elementary school in December 2012.
The inscription on the bell reads, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings."
