Maui, Hawaii-- A German tourist is in the hospital after being attacked by a shark. According to mauinow.com, the 20 year-old's arm was bitten off.

Witnesses told investigators that the woman was snorkeling near Palauea Beach in Makena when the incident happened Wednesday afternoon.

"We heard screaming from the water and it was this unbelievable scream like I've never heard before," one person told Mauinow.com.

It took nearly ten minutes for rescue swimmers to get the woman out of the water and into medical care. Those who watched say it looked like she had a bite mark on at least one foot as well.

The attack took place around 150 feet from shore in windy conditions, workers aren't sure what kind of shark bit the woman.

Beaches were closed a mile in each direction from the attack as workers patrolled the area looking for large predators.

This is third incident involving a shark reported in the past three weeks, according to mauinow.com.

The other two attacks:

On Tuesday, August 13, a shark bit an unmanned board about a quarter mile offshore of Ka?a Point near Kanaha Beach in Central Maui. No one was injured in that incident.

Wednesday July 31, 2013, a woman from California was treated for shark bites to her torso. The attack happened in Ulua Beach area of South Maui.
