-- The Eiffel Tower was evacuated Saturday evening after local police received a bomb threat from an anonymous caller. The call said the attack would occur around 9:30 p.m. local time.

Some 1,500 people, including shopkeepers and tower security, were forced down from the monument and into the Champs-de-Mars as Paris police ascended with teams of bomb-sniffing dogs.

Paris' anti-terrorism squad were on the scene investigating.

No explosives were found.

French authorities have stepped up counterterrorism measures in recent weeks amid heightened concern about threats to France over its military campaign against al-Qaida-linked fighters in Mali which began more than two months ago.

The source of the call is currently unknown, but according to Le Parisien it originated from a phone booth in a Paris suburb.

The tower is occasionally evacuated because of such warnings, at least once last year and twice in 2011.

The 1,063-foot tower is one of the world's top tourist attractions, with millions of visitors a year.
