Calverton, NY -- Thousands of cars that were damaged during Superstorm Sandy are now up for auction at the Calverton Airport on Long Island, New York.
The company hosting the sale, Insurance Auto Auctions, has no time estimate to complete the auction of 15-thousand vehicles. The auctioneer is also paying the town of Riverhead almost $3 million dollars to house the cars.
Residents of the town Riverhead are worried that the thousands of damaged vehicles sitting for 6-12 months could cause environmental issues with leaking oil, gasoline, and other fluids into the groundwater.
The auctioneer is sending as many car carriers as possible to the area to remove these vehicles in a safe and economic fashion.
