Winston-Salem, NC - We all drive on highways. You know how important it is to be aware of what's going on in front of you, behind you and to left and right. However, you might not always be aware about what's going above you.
This weekend, two parents and their three-year-old daughter were traveling on I-40 West near exit 196. They noticed three people standing on top of an overpass. Seconds later, they realized those individuals were throwing something over the side right into the traffic.
"We were just driving along. Then, all of sudden you hear a, 'Pow!' It sounded like a gunshot. It hit the side of the car. It sounded like a gunshot. It scared the daylights out of me," Derrick Herbin said.
Anna Shaw was driving. "It could have hit me through the windshield. It could have run us off the road...It's just crazy. People can kill people like that. It's dangerous out here, Shaw said.
The items thrown from the overpass scratched the family's car. The couple got an estimate for the damage today. The repair job will cost more than $600. The family told WFMY News 2 they have no idea why the group of people were throwing things.
When they pulled over, they came across another man who had a shattered windshield.
"He had a big hole like this in his windshield from the rock. I said, 'It's a blessing that you didn't get hurt," Herbin said.
Winston-Salem Police said the case is closed. The officers were not able to find the people responsible. WFMY News 2 asked for an interview with police, but no officer was available.
Greensboro Police said this same kind of thing has happened several times over the past few years.
