GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The low temperature at the Piedmont Triad International Airport dropped to 7°. For those of you keeping track this was the third time the Triad has seen temperatures drop into the single-digits this January.

The first time temperatures dropped into the single-digits this year was on January 7th when the low was 5°s and the second time was on January 24th. Prior to January 7th the last time the Triad had temperatures in the single-digits was in 2004 on December 20th when it was 9°.

What really puts these three single-digit temperatures into perspective is that the prior three times temperatures were in the single-digits was over a span of 18 years; 2004 (9°), 2000 (7°) and 1996 (2° & 8°).

The last time a month had three or more days with single-digit temperatures was January 1994.  That year there was five consecutive days with temperatures in the single-digits if not colder.

The streak of frigid air looked like this:

     - 1/15/1994 (7°)

     - 1/16/1994 (3°)

     - 1/18/1994 (7°)

     - 1/19/1994 (-1°)

     - 1/20/1994 (9°)

While there have been some outbreaks of extreme cold this January the only record on January 7th with the low temperature of 5°.  The old record was 14° set back in 1988. January 2014, however, has so far been the 10th coldest January on record for the Triad with an average temperature of 33.5°.
