CAMP PENDLETON, Calif -- A Marine from Union County died earlier this
week while trying to complete water skills test, Marine Corps officials
Joshua Islam, 18, was participating in an initial screening for a
precursor to the Marines' physically demanding reconnaissance training,
said Col. Sean Gibson, a spokesman for Training and Education Command.
Islam graduated from Weddington High School where he played baseball for the Warriors.
He had graduated from boot camp only three months earlier in October, Gibson said.
Islam died Monday in a pool at Camp Las Pulgas in California while
undergoing a test that required him to tread water for 30 minutes.
The circumstances surrounding Islam's death remain unclear and Gibson said the incident is under investigation.
Brig. Gen. John Simmons, commanding general of Training Command, expressed his condolences to Islam's family.
"I wish to extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family of
Private First Class Islam," he said. "Our first priority is to provide
his family with the support they need during this difficult time."
