FT. BRAGG, N.C.-- Friday, Airmen of the 21st Special Tactics Squadron on Fort Bragg's Pope Army Air Field received two Silver Stars and a Purple Heart.
According to a media release, Lt. General Eric Fiel presented the prestigious Silver Star and a Purple Heart to Master Sgt. Delorean Sheridan, Staff Sgt. Christopher Baradat and Technical Sgt. Jeremy Whiddon, members of the 21st Special Tactics Squadron, for their actions against insurgent forces that saved the lives of several team members in Afghanistan.
Sheridan defended his unit from insurgent attacks and helped wounded service members to safety; he then directed incoming fire on insurgent positions taking out five of his attackers.
Baradat's team responded to a pinned down element in the Sono Valley where he directed aircraft fire from little to no cover onto insurgent forces resulting in the elimination of fifty enemy combatants and the rescue of over a hundred friendly forces. Whiddon was wounded during a battle with insurgents while he coordinated with air support elements.
The Silver Star is the third highest military decoration for valor in the US Air Force after the Medal of Honor and the Air Force Cross.
