GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A man charged in the murder of a 7-year-old girl who was killed 23 years ago is now in the Guilford County Jail.

Donald Preston Ferguson of Spartanburg, S.C. was taken into custody on Tuesday in South Carolina and Friday he was extradited to Guilford County.

Ferguson was arrested by the United States Marshals and charged with First Degree Murder and First Degree Sex Offense in connection to the murder of 7-year-old, Shalonda S. Poole.

Ferguson was 29, when Shalonda disappeared from the family's Hampton Homes residence on July 21, 1990. Her body was later found with signs of sexual assault and strangulation the next day in a wooded area behind Jones Elementary School.

Police say in August of 1990, Ferguson left the area but months later was charged and convicted of a sexual assault in Spartanburg, S.C. He was released from jail in 1997 and was on active probation until his arrest.

Investigators credit forensic technology and old fashion detective work for his arrest.

Ferguson is in the Guilford County Detention Center.
