GREENSBORO, NC -- The Target security breach was weeks ago, but the danger isn't over.

If you haven't heard anything from your bank, that doesn't mean you're in the clear. Some people are just now finding out their personal information was indeed compromised and their bank is just now re-issuing their cards.

We called the North Carolina Banker's Association to find out why. Nathan Batts, Senior VP Counsel,  told me the information flow can be slow.

As Target investigates how the hackers got into the system, they pass the information to the banks and credit card companies.

The new information, often means a bigger information breach and more people affected.

For instance, Target initially thought the information taken was encrypted. Then Batts says they figured out it wasn't, which means accounts they thought weren't in danger, now are!

And that may be why you're now just hearing from your bank.

Batts couldn't give a definite time frame for when they may be finished notifying all the victims.

In the meantime, the best line of defense is to check your accounts often and get a credit report. You can get a FREE credit report each year from Experian, Trans Union and Equifax. Space it out to give yourself the most protection. This month ask for your FREE report from Experian, in May get the report from Trans Union and in December get it from Equifax.

The ONLY true FREE credit report is from AnnualCreditReport.com
