FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Authorities say a woman who died after hitting the cars of two Cumberland County deputies appeared to be trying to kill herself.
Investigators said 42-year-old Rebecca Holmes died Monday night when her SUV crossed the center line and smashed into a deputy responding to a call that Holmes had slashed her wrists. The deputy suffered a broken ankle and a severe cut to her hand.
Authorities say Holmes also hit a cruiser that had just arrived at her home as she drove away. A friend had called 911 to report she was trying to hurt herself.
A second friend, Michelle Fontaine, told The Fayetteville Observer that Holmes struggled with setbacks, but was always ready to help others.
