Citizens Suggest "Random Acts of Kindness" For Parking Attendants

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The city of Greensboro is working to change the way you think of parking attendants. 

It isn't in Officer Campbell's job description yet -- but along with tickets she hands out random acts of kindness.

"It's my fault. I thought I would be done by now but I ended up staying later," explained Greensboro resident Jeff Bennett.

Officer Campbell gave Jeff Bennet his 7th parking ticket this year on Monday, and he wasn't even mad.

Instead of an angry reaction, he gave her some holiday cheer.

"Happy New Year, Merry Christmas!"

Assistant City Manager David Parrish says the random acts of kindness idea came from a brainstorming session with downtown business owners and city stakeholders.

Parrish says they discussed ways to "do more than enforcement. Also try to be approachable, be encouraging and be proactive by educating people."

He says parking attendants are like ambassadors to the city and he wants them to hand out more than just tickets.

"We haven't implemented a full five random acts of kindness in our personnel motto but we are encouraging our staff to maybe go the extra step, go that extra mile to be a little more courteous," explained Parrish.

"I think it would be awesome because I don't like getting these tickets but I think a random act of kindness would be great," explained Bennett.

Job requirement or not, Officer Campbell is more than happy to meet a kindness quota.

"Happy new year's to you!"

The kindness requirement is not on the books but the enforcement time for metered parking has changed.

The city has shortened the time from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Parrish said, "That was one of the most vocal things we heard - you know why are we ticketing after 5:00?"

Beginning in 2014, the city will give out warnings in some cases instead of tickets.
