GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It was a very successful holiday season for some small businesses this year.
"It was extremely exciting for us to see so many people in the store on such a consistent basis," said Sarah Margaret Church. She owns Just Be in downtown Greensboro. The store sells items from more than 60 local artists.
"A lot of our local artists, they had their best month and almost doubled their sales from last year," said Church.
Overall, holiday sales at small businesses were up across the country. On Small Business Saturday alone, consumers spent about $5.7 billion at local merchants. That's about 4% higher than last year.
Church believes the increased popularity of shopping local is part of the reason. "I think a lot of people are really wanting to support local and shop small. I think that movement is really taking off."
A trend Church, and other small business owners, hope will continue even after the holiday season.
Church tells us even though Christmas is over, they've still seen a steady stream of people come through their downtown doors.
