GREENSBORO, N.C. -- What a difference a day makes.

Greensboro's Toys for Tots was 6,000 toys short Wednesday, but by Thursday, their need has almost been met.

The program received much needed donations, allowing them to fill nearly a dozen shopping carts full of gifts to be given to needy families.

"We were kind of realizing that we were cutting it close and probably not going to make it unless we really got some help," explained Staff Sergeant Jonathan Swanson, United States Marine Corps.

He said Toys for Tots had to call more than 10 organizations earlier in the week and warn them donations were low.

"Some of them we had to call and just say hey we will call you back and let you know when you can come pick up. Right now we don't know when it's going to be," explained SSgt. Swanson.

After letting the community know about their need, donations came pouring in.

On Wednesday, SSgt Swanson and others with Toys for Tots went shopping and purchased 800 toys.

But even with all the money and toys they've received in the last 24 hours, it still might not be enough.

"I don't even know where to begin to have to tell a child okay you are not going to get anything for Christmas due to financial reasons and them looking at me like 'financial reasons?'" said Vickie Poole.

Vickie Poole says she was told by a church her Toys for Tots request might not be filled because donations were low.

She made requests for 10 children ranging from ages 2 to 16-years-old. Some are her grandchildren and others are kids who live in her neighborhood.

She said, "If we don't find another avenue, the families including myself, will not be able to provide Christmas for their kids."

After learning Toys for Tots' donations need is nearly met - she has a new hope there will be a gift under her Christmas tree.

"To be able to see a smile on a child's face at Christmas time is like the best present I can receive," said Poole.

Friday is the last collection day for Toys for Tots.

To donate: email t4tgso@gmail.com or drop off your gift at the Toys for Tots warehouse. The address is 7302 Cessna Drive, Greensboro.
