ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page confirms to WFMY News 2 that Harley Fulp, the 18-year-old charged with setting the fire that destroyed Gideon Grove United Methodist Church, pleaded guilty in court Monday.

Fulp admitted to setting the fire just days before Christmas last year, on Dec. 22. Crews from nearly a dozen different stations helped extinguish the fire.

According to the district attorney's office, Fulp said he poured gasoline through a window that he broke.

The fire damaged the church significantly and members from the church had to meet at Palestine UMC.

Officers arrested Harley Fulp in April 2013, officials charged him with Felonious Burning of a Church or Religious Building in connection to the arson.

A judge sentenced Fulp to 20-36 months of supervised probation. He has to complete 100 hours of community service by helping to rebuild the church. Fulp also has to write a letter of apology and read it aloud while standing in front of the congregation.
