REIDSVILLE, N.C. -- The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office is assisting the Red Cross of Rockingham County in spearheading its annual food drive to feed the hundreds of civilians within the county's 15.8 percent poverty rate.

WFMY News 2 spoke with the sheriff's office and Red Cross on Tuesday, which also is a national day of giving campaign dubbed "Giving Tuesday" on social media, or #GivingTuesday on Twitter.

Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page and deputy Kevin Suthard said every day while performing their jobs, they witness instances of hunger in the county.  The Red Cross of Rockingham County said in the month of October, it served 656 households.  In November, it served only 565, because it ran out of food.

The food drive runs through Dec. 20, and people are encouraged to drop off canned or non-perishable food items to the Rockingham County Sheriff's office--P.O. Box 128 in Wentworth or the Red Cross at 3692 NC 14 in Reidsville. People also can flag down any sheriff's deputy, with whom they can drop off donations.
