ASHEVILLE, N.C.  --  Electricity has been restored to the UNC Asheville campus.

Problems with a transformer that serves the university caused an outage that was first reported at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, UNCA spokesman Steve Plever said. Duke Energy had to replace the transformer, he said.

Power was retored around noon today, but it took more than an hour after that to get electricity back at full strength in all facilities. The outage forced the university to shut down today.

The affected substation serves the UNCA campus only.

Officials said a raccoon got into the substation, causing a malfunction in a large transformer that resulted in the outage.

Only those employees designated as essential personnel reported to campus. All campus events scheduled for today were postponed until further notice. Campus recreation facilities and Ramsey Library are closed until power is restored.

Ramsey Library reopened at 1:30 p.m. and will remain open until 2 a.m. Campus Recreation facilities also have reopened and will follow their regular schedule until 11 p.m. Highsmith University Union and the Dining Hall are also open.

Normal campus operations will resume tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 3, which is a pre-finals reading day for students. Final exams begin on Wednesday, December 4.
