Charlotte -- Attorney General Roy Cooper says his office will handle the prosecution of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Randall Kerrick.

The Mecklenburg County district attorney requested this arrangement since before he was elected, he was a partner at the law firm that's now representing officer Kerrick.

Early Saturday, officer Kerrick shot 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell 10 times. Police say Ferrell might have been seeking help after a car wreck when he went to a home and knocked on the door and frightened a woman, who then called 911. She thought he was trying to break in.

Kerrick's attorney says Ferrell ignored warnings to get on the ground and stop advancing toward responding officers.
