FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Investigators say a 27-year-old Rockingham man has been shot to death as he tried to run away from three men who kidnapped him at a Fayetteville gas station.
Police said two of the suspects got into Errol Williams' car at the gas station around 4:45 a.m. Sunday and forced him to drive away while the third man followed in a different vehicle.
Authorities say Williams tried to run away at some point and was shot and killed. Police say the men then returned to the gas station Sunday afternoon and stole surveillance equipment at gunpoint. But investigators had already released footage of the men to the media.
They are trying to identify the suspects. Police didn't give a motive for the crime.
Fayettville Police released the following release on the crime:
Detectives have identified the deceased victim as Errol Williams (B/M, 27 years of age) of Rockingham NC. The investigation has revealed that Williams was kidnapped and robbed from the parking lot of the Kangaroo convenience store located at 5642 Bragg Boulevard by three (3) unknown black males operating a Gray/Silver newer model Kia Sportage.
During the kidnapping and robbery, two (2) of the black males got into the victim's vehicle and forced him to drive to the area of Gregory Street. Once in the area of Gregory Street, the victim attempted to flee to safety and was fatally shot by the suspect(s).
A series of surveillance images from the Kangaroo convenience store have been attached to the media release for dissemination. The photographs depict one of the black male suspects and the Kia Sportage.
