Greensboro, NC -- Clean-up is crucial in a restaurant. That's why inspectors are serious about restaurants not blocking the handwash sink.

It may sound simple to say use another sink, but there's a trickle down contamination effect that comes into play.

GTCC Culinary Department Instructor Keith Gardiner shows us how easy bacteria can spread - all because of a blocked sink.

"If I'm going to the handsink chances are my hands are contaminated." He said. "So anything I have to touch to move is going to get contaminated. So you run the risk of contaminating other things. If I wash my hands at another sink I'm contaminating another sink where i might do food preparation later. Again that's cross contamination. A huge problem and just a bad practice."

Restaurants can lose as many as two points for blocking the handsink.
