Eden, NC -- A vote on public prayer was brought to the table during Monday's Rockingham County School Board meeting, with the board voting 7-3 against opening board meetings with prayer.

At the beginning of May, Leonard Pryor turned in his resignation letter to the board. Pryor gave his notice nearly two weeks before board members voted on whether to allow prayer before each school board meeting.

Pryor had been on the board for three years.

In his resignation letter, Pryor said he didn't want to be part of a vote that could possibly bring legal troubles.

"We took an oath of office to support the constitution of the United States," said Pryor. "And, it is my opinion that recent motions and topics of discussion could subject Rockingham County Schools and its individual board members to the threat of lawsuits in the future."

To read Pryor's entire resignation letter, see the attached documents.

Pryor declined to speak with WFMY News 2 on camera. He told us, instead, to read his resignation letter, which is his only comment on the matter.

School Board Chairwoman Nell Rose expressed disappointment with Pryor's decision.

"I regret that Mr. Pryor resigned and he will be missed," Rose told WFMY News 2. "He made decisions as a board member that he felt were the best for our students and our system."

School board officials say the search for Pryor's replacement is already underway.
