Auburn Hills, MI -- A 47-year-old man said police were picking on him when they arrested him for driving his riding lawnmower drunk last week.

Roy Walton was arrested after police spotted the riding mower parked on the sidewalk outside Rite Aid on Woodward at Square Lake Road at 9:49 p.m. March 22, according to a report issued Thursday by the Bloomfield Township Police Department.

"Officers watched the mower for a few minutes and observed a subject exit the store, get on the mower and begin to drive away," officers wrote. "The subject was stopped and found to be intoxicated."

Walton, who had prior drunken driving convictions, was charged with felony operating while intoxicated.

The lawnmower was impounded by General Towing, which hauled it to the impound lot on Auburn Road in Auburn Hills. Walton was taken to jail, arraigned and released on $25,000 personal bond.

A woman who declined to give her name at General today said that Walton picked up his lawnmower the next morning. He had to pay about $200 in fees for towing and storage at General's impound lot on Auburn Road in Auburn Hills.

"He just really couldn't figure out why they were picking on him," she said.

Bloomfield Township Police said more information about the incident and video was not available due to the holiday and may be released Monday.
