Raleigh, NC-- A man is dead after being shot and killed by law enforcement officers in Wake County.
WRAL-TV is reporting that the man was a 35-year-old mental patient who was being transported from Wake County to a facility in Winston Salem when the incident happened.
Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said the man who was seated in the front passenger side of the patrol car got into an altercation with the deputy who was transporting him.
The deputy pulled the car over, both got out of the car and the fight continued. When the deputy slipped and fell in the mud, Sheriff Harrison said the man took off in the deputy's patrol car leading other officers on a chase down Interstate 440 and 540.
According to WRAL, the man crashed the car near the Leesville Road exit and ran away from the scene on foot. At some point, he got into another fight with officers and was shot and killed, Harrison said.
Law enforcement officials have closed two lanes of I-540 East following the incident, and at least one lane of the highway could remain closed throughout the afternoon Sunday.
State Bureau of Investigation agents are also on scene.
