Winston-Salem, NC -- The Federal Aviation Agency announced it will officially close Smith Reynolds Airport due to budget cuts from the federal sequester, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

Friday, the FAA released its final list of 149 contract towers that will close across the country.

Smith Reynolds is one of five airports in North Carolina that have towers on the FAA's list. The others are in New Bern, Hickory, Kinston and Concord.

Smith Reynolds officials say they will continue to look for other ways to keep the tower in operation.

The FAA will start shutting down towers over a four-week period starting April 7.
