Greensboro, NC -- Guilford County is facing millions of dollars in a budget shortfall.
Guilford County Commissioner Carolyn Coleman said the county could face major layoffs in 2013. The commissioners have not yet put this on the table.
At the commissioners' retreat, the former county manager told them they are facing a $41,000,000 budget deficit this year.
Coleman said she thinks they can make cuts to the point that the budget hole will end up around $12 million. Coleman doesn't think there are enough votes for a tax increase.
Coleman believes commissioners will likely be talking about cutting staff. Her exact words on a phone call with WFMY News 2's Lauren Melvin were, "so major layoffs at this point."
She didn't offer specifics, but said they'll probably start talking more about this at their work session next Thursday.
Commissioner Bruce Davis, who co-chairs the budget committee, told WFMY News 2 he can't say definitively at this point whether there will be layoffs or a tax increase.
