Mt. Airy, NC -- An unnamed cleaning supply manufacturer announced it will open a distribution center in Mt. Airy, creating about 140 jobs over the next five years, according to the Mt. Airy Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber President Betty Ann Collins says the company will be announced Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mt. Airy.
The company plans to set up a distribution center initially and could later manufacture its cleaning products at the center. Collins says the company makes more than 100 household cleaning supplies.
The manufacturer will take over the 540,000 sq. ft. Bassett Furniture factory on Sheep Farm Road, which has been vacant since 2008.
Collins says the company could hire employees within the first few months after the announcement.
The Surry County Board of Commissioners tentatively approved a $543,448 incentive package for the project in November; the company is expected to make a $21.5 million investment in the plant.
Collins says the big news will give the area the economic boost it needs.
"When you have these announcements, it uplifts the community," she said. "This is exactly what we need as we move forward into 2013."
