Greensboro, NC -- The newly constructed Ronald McNair Elementary School will open Monday, 6-months after it was scheduled to.

In March 2011, the Guilford County School board voted to name the school after Ronald McNair, an astronaut and Greensboro native. McNair was one of seven astronauts killed when the Challenger exploded in 1986.

The school was scheduled to open the first day of the 2012 school year, but August 17, just 10 days before the first day, GCS announced the school would not be ready.

At first, the school district said the delay would only be a couple of weeks or months and that they were keeping a close eye on the progress. By September, News 2 learned the school was scheduled to open on October 31.

Just a few days after the new opening day was set, the school board voted to remove the contractor after finding them in default.

Construction was yet again delayed when subcontractors complained they were getting shortchanged. They told News 2 they weren't paid by Farley Associates for the work they completed.

News 2 looked into the construction company and found trouble seemed to follow them.  Farley Associates was hired by the city of Winston-Salem to build a fire station. The subcontractors on that project said they weren't getting paid either. The city eventually fired Farley Associates.

Further digging lead News 2 to South Carolina. Turns out, Farley Associates was working on three projects in the Fort Mill School District. The district told us those projects would likely go into default.

In October, the bond company representing Farley Associates hired JE Dunn to finish the work at McNair Elementary. A new opening date of February was scheduled.

Construction continued through the fall semester and holiday break. In January, we checked back in with the district and on January 28, they announced McNair would open February 4th.

Friday, after delay after delay, students were finally able to tour their new elementary school.
