Winston-Salem, NC-- Officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department are investigating a student for having an unloaded gun on campus at Carver High School.
School spokesperson Theo Helm tells WFMY that around 2:00pm today, staff in the main office received a report from a student that another student may be in possession of a gun.
As a precaution, the school was put on lockdown, while the School Resource Officer, who is a Winston-Salem Police Officer and additional officers talked to the reporting student.
The gun report came after two juveniles got into a fight on campus, police said.
After talking to the student and a search of the school, officers found the unloaded .22 caliber gun in a backpack in a classroom, police confirmed.
Due to the search, school dismissal was delayed slightly, and students went home for the day around 3:40pm.
The juvenile was placed in the Forsyth County Juvenile Detention Center.
Friday, Police charged Raul Olivera Mejia, in connection to the incident, with Failure to Secure a Weapon to Protect a Minor.
