Owner of Serenity Care, Tillery Chase Owed More Than $2.5 Million

Greensboro, NC -- What led up to the seemingly sudden shut down of two assisted living facilities in the Triad?

WFMY News 2 did some digging and found Larry Patton, the owner of Tillery Chase and Serenity Care, has a paper trail.

In fact, the folder in the Guilford County Courthouse for Patton is hundreds of pages thick.

On Tuesday, WFMY News 2 reported Patton owed back taxes on his property in Guilford County. However, he owes way more than we first thought.

According to court documents, last month, a Guilford County Superior Court judge ruled against Patton to the tune of $1.5 million.

Add another $705,000 in interest, another $21,000 in late fees and $314,000 for attorney fees, and he's got an outstanding bill totaling more than $2.5 million.

But Patton's debt grows even bigger from that.

Patton owes $11,000 in delinquent property taxes on the Tillery Chase facility in Montgomery County. And he's late paying another $3,800 in delinquent property taxes for the Serenity Care building in Greensboro.

And maybe that's why Tillery Chase was in danger of being shut down.

On Wednesday, WFMY News 2 obtained documents that revealed several state investigations and violations against Tillery Chase.

After 13 investigations and two inspections since 2010, the state said Tillery Chase "has demonstrated an inability to achieve and/or maintain compliance...And the failure to comply endangered the health, safety or welfare of the residents..."

The document is dated last Thursday.

Did Patton's money troubles cause these violations and eventually put his residents in danger?

We've tried emailing and calling Patton with no response.

One of our calls to a listed number was answered by a fax machine, but we'll keep trying.

We also found Patton has a criminal record. In 1999, he was convicted of embezzlement of state property.
