Reidsville, NC -- Four months after surgery complications almost claimed his life, little Jaxx Denny is headed back to Philadelphia for another surgery.

The Reidsville baby was born without six ribs on his right side, a kidney, and with an "s"-shaped spine.

Every four months, surgeons have to expand the metal rods in Jaxx's back and rib cage.

While Jaxx's first expansion surgery in August was a success, the problems came during Jaxx's recovery.

The right side of Jaxx's heart became enlarged. Doctors said it was working too hard to pump blood to his right lung and throughout his body.

"There's not a day that goes by, I don't go through my phone and look at some of those pictures.  And I just thank God every single day because I look at those pictures with the tubes in his mouth and everything, and I look at him when I get home, and I'm like, 'thank you God'," said Pete Denny, Jaxx's dad.

Doctors diagnosed Jaxx with pulmonary hypertension, a condition that neither the Dennys nor doctors were aware Jaxx had.

After surgery, doctors had to put Jaxx on a ventilator. At one point, they told Pete and Tammy Denny that Jaxx's condition was critical.

He spent three weeks in the hospital recovering.

This weekend, Jaxx and his parents will head back to Philadelphia. On Tuesday, his rods will be expanded again.

Doctors told Pete and Tammy Denny that this time, Jaxx will have a whole team of specialists in the operating room to monitor his heart.

Pete and Tammy Denny are hoping they can catch the pulmonary hypertension before it flares up.

"We're a little more nervous this time, still peaceful though," said Tammy Denny.  "It's going to be a little harder handing him off this time than it was last time."

"We're scared to death, but we're positive," said Pete Denny.  "I know God's got it. He's got a plan for Jaxx and I said from the beginning, we're just trusting that."
