Cpl. Barber got behind the vehicle and the driver then exceeded the speed limit. The officer activated his blue lights to initiate a traffic stop near I-40 and Merritt Drive, but the driver failed to pull over. The woman got off the interstate at High Point Road and accelerated on the off-ramp. Police said she continued to speed from the officer crossing High Point Road and turning onto Pinecroft Road.

Witnesses told investigators, that during the pursuit the driver didn't stop at three red lighted intersections on Pinecroft Road. They said she lost control of the car in a curve, hit several objects and the car flipped multiple times before it came to rest.

Carter was pronounced dead on the scene by Emergency responders. Police haven't released her identity.

She was the only person inside the car, police said.

Chief Ken Miller said the Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the accident and the Professional Standards Division is conducting an administrative investigation to determine if departmental policies were followed during the incident.
