RALEIGH -- As details continue to emerge following--what some call--the worst school shooting in our nation's history, local and state officials are offering condolences to families involved in the tragedy.

From Gov. Bev Perdue:

"Our thoughts and hearts are with the families of the victims of this senseless act of violence in Newtown, Conn. Bob and I are deeply shocked and heartbroken over this tragic loss of life. Our prayers are with all the families of the children, teachers and administrators."

Friday, Perdue also joined President Barack Obama in ordering all U.S. and N.C. state flags to be lowered on state property thru sunset on Dec. 18. The president and governor ask that citizens also follow this procedure.

From Attorney Gen. Roy Cooper:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this horrific school shooting, their families and their community. We hope that North Carolina never faces a tragedy like this, but we owe it to students, parents and teachers to be ready. North Carolina schools have been provided with strategies and training to help them prepare for a school shooting, and all schools need to review those plans to make sure they're ready."

News 2 also spoke with a local rabbi about Friday's events.

Take a look as Rabbi Fred Guttman of Temple Emanuel in Greensboro offers some perspectives on the school shooting in Newtown, CT.
