Jamestown, NC -- It was a tragedy that took part of Rocky Smith's family away.

Guilford County Sheriff Deputies say Mary Ann Holder shot and killed her sons Dylan and Zack Smith, her niece Hanaleigh Suttles, her nephew Ricky Suttles, and Dylan's girlfriend Makayla Woods, before killing herself.

"Life goes on, love remains, and God is there to strengthen you to make it one more day. And then tomorrow, you have to do that again, and then the next day you do that again. And the next day, you do that again," said Rocky Smith, Dylan and Zack's father.

Rocky and his wife Gail are almost to day 365 of waking up, and doing it all over again.

"I'm very proud and blessed to call them mine. They were amazing, the heart that they had, the kindness, the support. They would do anything for anybody and that's something to be really proud of," explained Gail Smith, Dylan and Zack's stepmother.

November 20th will mark one year since the greatest tragedy of their lives. But instead of approaching the anniversary with sorrow, they celebrate because the lives of Dylan, Zack, Hanaleigh, Ricky and Makayla were more than their deaths.

"You live for the good memories."

But the bad memories still exist.

"There are still days it doesn't seem real. I mean, it's our reality, we know that, but you don't want it to be your reality. And it will never get easy. It's not an easy thing to deal with," explains Christina Key, Dylan and Zack's sister.

"It's kind of hard to celebrate it."

Austin Coble was Zack's best friend.

"He was really funny. Really funny..."

Austin misses his friend and Christina misses her brothers and Gail and Rocky miss their sons.

"It is a very sad situation but those kids weren't sad people, they weren't mean people, they weren't hateful people, they were full of life and that's the point, that life does go on and it is worth living," said Christina.

"This is a tragic situation," said Rocky. "But we can't stop living. We can't crawl in a whole. We can't give up on what God has for us to do."

And so, they celebrate.
