Rodanthe, NC -- The N.C. Department of Transportation is warning of a rough ride for those driving four-wheel-drive vehicles on storm-damaged N.C. 12 on Pea Island.

DOT says the road will open by noon Saturday to those vehicles. One lane will be open in each direction except at the temporary bridge and the Bonner Bridge, where one lane will be open.

Superstorm Sandy closed the highway last month. Ferries have provided the only access to Hatteras Island.

DOT warns that drivers will travel over sand, damaged pavement and water. They'll also have to follow makeshift lane markers.

The route will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the first few days. Once both lanes are open on the temporary bridge, DOT will allow four-wheel-drive traffic 24 hours a day.
