Dare County, NC -- The Department of Transportation closed part N.C. 12 in Dare County because of overwash and flooding as Hurricane Sandy approaches.

DOT is also reporting N.C. 12 overwash in Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Buxton and north of Hatteras Village, along with flooding in Rodanthe and Ocracoke.

Crews are looking into damage on the coast, but conditions are making the process difficult. DOT says more water and sand could build up Sunday evening, and especially during high tide.

Sandy has already forced most ferry services to shut down. DOT's Ferry Division suspended all ferries by 8 p.m. Saturday night, and some operations continued Sunday morning.

Travelers with questions about ferry services should call the ferry terminals directly for routes and schedule updates.
