Madison, NC -- Police arrested a man for arson after he helped several people out of a burning apartment Monday morning, according to Madison police.
Chief Perry Webster said police and several fire crews responded to the Lassiter Square Apartments in Madison around 10:30 a.m. in response to a fire.
When crews arrived, they learned Jacob Rumley went into the building and helped several people to safety.
After further investigation, police determined Rumley was responsible for starting the fire.
No one inside the building was injured, but a firefighter did suffer from a heart attack at the scene, Webster said.
Chief Webster estimated nine families were displaced by the fire.
Madison police arrested Rumley and placed him in the Rockingham County Jail under a $25,000 bond.
Rumley's motives are still unclear.
