Asheboro, NC -- The NC Zoo is celebrating the birth of another baby gorilla--the second in less than a month.

"Olympia," a 16-year-old female, gave birth to a 4-pound male gorilla around 7 p.m. Friday.

The baby still hasn't been named.

The mother went into labor around 5 p.m. The baby was born in the gorilla holding quarters two hours later and appears to be in good health.

The zoo saw its first successful gorilla birth in 23 years Aug. 4 when "Jumani," 12, gave birth to baby "Bomassa."

The father of both newborns is "Nkosi," a 19-year-old male.

This is Olympia's first baby, and only the third baby gorilla born at the NC Zoo. "Kwanza" was the first in 1989.

There are currently only 350 gorillas in 52 zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Each year, only 4 out of 8 gorilla pregnancies end in successful births, so to have two in one zoo, in less than a month, is rare.
