Man Killed In Accident At Evonik Stockhausen Plant Greensboro

Greensboro, NC-- Greensboro Emergency responders and the NC Department of Labor are investigating a fatality that happened this morning at a chemical plant.

Neal O'Briant with the Labor department's Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) confirmed that one person was killed this morning. O'Briant said a man got caught between a tractor and trailer during hookup at Evonik Stockhausen chemical plant.

According to the Greensboro Police, the accident happened around 10:29am. The victim was identified as Michael Stimpson. Police found Stimpson pinned between a commercial carrier cab and a trailer. A preliminary investigation has revealed that Stimpson walked into the path of the cab while Donald Gayles was backing up to connect the cab to the trailer. Stimpson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Greensboro Police traffic unit along with OSHA are still investigating the accident.

Stimpson was employed at Stockhausen.

Evonik Stockhausen released this statement to WFMY News 2 about the incident: "It is with great sadness that Evonik Stockhausen LLC confirms an employee was fatally injured at about 10:40 a.m. today while working in a warehouse at the company's facility on Doyle Street".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of our employee," said Reinhold Brand, president of Evonik Stockhausen. "This is a terrible tragedy. Everyone at our Greensboro site is deeply saddened and shocked. We will ensure they receive all necessary support and assistance at this difficult time."
