(Winston Salem, NC) -- In April officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department were dispatched on a reported embezzlement that happened at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Officers were advised that one of the medical center former employees had fraudulently cashed several thousand dollars worth of patient refund checks.
Detectives with the Winston-Salem Police Department assumed the investigation. During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the 17 year employee had embezzled 219 checks totaling $114,002 over the period of January 2011 through March 2012.
As a result of the investigation, Steven Byron Tisdale, of Pfafftown, was charged with Embezzlement Over $100,000. Court date is scheduled for August 10, 2012.
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center relased the following statement:
"Wake Forest Baptist reissued the 219 checks affected by this fraud, and all patients have received their refunds.
As a result of the investigation and a full examination of internal controls, further steps have been taken to strengthen and improve systems within the division.
While the Medical Center is confident that the investigation revealed the full extent of the fraud, any patient with a question about their account should contact Wake Forest Baptist Customer Service at 336-716-4729."
