Mount Airy, N.C. -- Andy Griffith, star of the Andy Griffith show, died the morning of July 3rd, 2012 at age 86. Griffith just had a birthday, June 1st. The actor received a music degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is best known for his roles in Matlock and as Andy Taylor in The Andy Griffith Show.
According to the Museum of Broadcast Communications, The Andy Griffith Show was created as an effort to minimize the violence on television, and became a forerunner for America's feel-good family comedies. The show ran eight seasons beginning in 1960 with a total of 249 episodes.
The Andy Griffith Show ran eight years and continued to place in TV's top 10 and reached #1 in its final season (TvRage.com). Only 90 of the shows episodes were in color (seasons 6-8). Griffith has played in each of the 249 episodes.
In addition to his role as an actor, Andy Griffith received a Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush in November of 2005. There is also an 11-mile stretch of US Highway 52 titled Andy Griffith Parkay that passes through Mount Airy, NC. Griffith was also inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame.
